Scouts Step Up for the Poppy Appeal: Honoring Remembrance and Supporting Those in Need
The Poppy Appeal is a time-honored tradition, and Scouts from the 6th Keighley (Oakworth) Scout Group took to the streets to raise funds for the Royal British Legion, dedicating their time to support this worthy cause. Sixteen young Scouts and three dedicated leaders joined the appeal, with each volunteer making a difference by selling poppies and other Poppy Appeal merchandise. For Scout Noah, the experience was incredibly meaningful. “I really like selling the poppies and raising money for such a special charity,” he shared. “I think it is important to remember those that have died or need our help, and by selling the poppies, we are helping those in need, and that is a good thing!”
James Credland, one of the group’s Scout leaders, was moved by the dedication his Scouts showed, praising their selflessness and community spirit. “The enthusiasm and professionalism they brought to the task made me extremely proud,” he said. “These young people are our future, and the fact they understand the importance and are happy to support this appeal is commendable. Well done, Scouts!”
Remembrance events like these bring communities together to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Nationwide, ceremonies take place at war memorials, cenotaphs, and religious buildings, where individuals of all ages gather to pay their respects. As Toby Hammond, County Youth Commissioner, highlighted, Scouts in West Yorkshire actively participate in local remembrance events every year. “We have many of our Scout groups taking part in remembrance events across West Yorkshire,” he explained. “This year, we’re also proud to have some of our members represented at the Cenotaph in London.”
The dedication shown by Scouts across the region reflects the organization’s commitment to community and remembrance. As they raise funds and give back, these young people are embodying the very principles of Scouting: service, respect, and compassion. Living by our Scouting values.
