Scouts County Environmental Advisor – Role Description

Role Title:

County Environmental Advisor – Note this is a volunteer role.

Responsible to:

County Lead Volunteer and Support Lead


Purpose of the Role

The County Environmental Advisor supports the County in embedding environmental sustainability into all aspects of Scouting. The role promotes environmentally responsible practices, encourages young people to engage with nature, and helps develop a culture of care for the environment in line with Scouts’ values and national priorities.


Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Support

  • Advise the County Leadership Team on environmental sustainability and climate action.
  • Support the development and delivery of a County Environmental or Sustainability Plan.
  • Embed environmental thinking into programme delivery and County events.
  • Support the aims of ‘place to belong’ strategy.

2. Guidance and Advice

  • Act as the main point of contact for environmental queries across the County.
  • Support Groups and Districts to adopt more sustainable practices (e.g. reducing waste, energy use, sustainable camps) and support young people to do this.
  • Provide practical, realistic guidance for volunteers.

3. Programme Development

  • Promote high-quality outdoor and environmental programmes.
  • Support leaders to incorporate environmental education and nature-based activities.
  • Encourage participation in badges, awards, and initiatives linked to the environment.

4. Training and Development

  • Work with the County Learning and Development Team to include sustainability within training.
  • Deliver or support workshops on environmental awareness and practical action.
  • Share resources, ideas, and best practice.

5. Advocacy and Culture

  • Champion environmental responsibility across the County.
  • Encourage young people to take the lead in environmental action.
  • Promote campaigns and national initiatives related to sustainability and climate action.

6. Partnerships and Community Engagement

  • Develop links with local environmental organisations and community groups.
  • Support collaborative projects that benefit local environments.
  • Encourage community-based environmental action.

7. Monitoring and Improvement

  • Support the County in identifying opportunities to reduce environmental impact.
  • Gather and share examples of good practice and share this across our scouting family.
  • Contribute to reporting on sustainability efforts and progress.

Skills and Experience

  • Passion for environmental sustainability and outdoor learning
  • Knowledge of environmental issues and practical solutions
  • Ability to inspire and engage volunteers and young people
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Experience in Scouting (desirable but not essential)
  • Experience in environmental projects or initiatives (desirable)
  • Ability to each big outcomes with a small budget

Time Commitment

Being flexible is key to this role

Attend a District AGM and St. Georges Day.

Attend the County AGM and Development Day

Attend County Meetings (2 a month)

Attend County Event (1 a month)

This role is for an initial period for one year.
