The excitement was full steam ahead on Saturday as West Yorkshire Squirrels hosted their BIG Day Out at Whistlestop Valley in Clayton West. 50 Squirrels and volunteers from across the county came together for a day packed with adventure, learning, and fun in true Scouting spirit.

The day began at 10am, with eager faces gathering at Whistlestop Valley station ready for a journey through time aboard the ‘Katie’, the vintage locomotion, for a scenic ride to Shelley Station.
Upon arrival, the group watched in awe as the locomotive was turned around on the historic turntable before exploring the adventure playground. By 11:50, the train was heading back to Clayton West, with Scouts arriving just in time for a well-earned lunch!
After lunch, the Squirrels split into groups for a range of fantastic activities. The programme offered something for everyone, from a fascinating engine talk and visit to the Engine Shed, to pedal car racing, playground fun, bouncing on the Jumping Pillow, and rides around the pond on the Clayton Flyer mini train.

The adventure continued with a short walk to Clayton West Scout HQ, where the group enjoyed lively games, followed by a campfire with a colour changing twist. The squirrel dreys from across the county gathered together to sing songs, share stories, and share in the fun together; a perfect reflection of Scouting values.

The day rounded off with delicious hot dogs, before everyone made their way back to Whistlestop Valley to meet parents, tired but beaming with smiles.

Dan Breeze, Squirrel Lead for West Yorkshire Scouts said,
“It’s been a brilliant day out for all our young people. The team at Whistlestop Valley were fantastic hosts, and it’s been wonderful to see squirrels from different groups across the county having fun, learning, and making memories together.”
The BIG Day Out was a celebration of community, adventure, and the simple joy of discovery, everything that makes Scouting special.
